Opportunities with
the Office
The Office of the Auditor
General of Nova Scotia operates as a state-of-the-art professional
audit office. Its focus on professional excellence makes it a valued
agency of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly and provider of
information to the public.
The Office maintains its
professional excellence by meeting or exceeding the auditing
standards of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA).
The Office employs leading-edge technology and best practices of
other professional organizations in order to be as effective as
possible.
The Office’s adherence to
the auditing standards and code of ethics of the CICA, and its
commitment to training and other forms of professional development,
permits it to train individuals seeking to become Chartered
Accountants. Likewise, the Office is able to train those seeking the
professional designation of Certified General Accountant or
Certified Management Accountant. The Office fully funds the cost of
a professional accounting program if the student is successful in
completing it and agrees to a two-year post-graduation
return-of-service requirement.
The Office offers a
potential career progression that spans seven levels – ranging from
Student Auditor all the way to Auditor General. It also offers a
range of interesting experiences in various types of auditing,
generally categorized as financial, performance and information
technology auditing.
The Nova Scotia public
sector is large and diverse, providing for a significant body of
potential audits for the Office. Experiences to be gained from the
work of the Office range from conducting small financial statement
audits by yourself to participating with twenty or more
professionals in the audit of the government’s consolidated
financial statements. They include examining complex governance and
control structures; assessing efficiency, economy and effectiveness
in important public service programs; and evaluating the security
and effectiveness of complex applications of information technology.
The Office is fully
committed to maintaining the professional competence of its staff
through varied training opportunities, supporting the obtaining of
other professional designations, provision of progressively
challenging assignments, and progressing staff members through a
career path that challenges their professional and leadership
skills. In addition, working for the Office of the Auditor General
provides an opportunity to provide a valuable service to the people
of Nova Scotia by helping to make its provincial government as
effective, efficient and accountable as it can be in its stewardship
over public funds.
The Office hires new staff
members at various levels in the organization on a regular basis.
